Matt Adareth developed and released his "Dactyl" ergonomic keyboard under CC license. This open source keyboard is described as “parameterized, split-hand, concave, columnar, ergonomic keyboard.”
As you can see it was 3d printed on a SLS machine but it could be probably made using other machines with some adjustments.

You can see a very interesting presentation by Matt about keyboard design and 3d printing at:

As I live near Danube and Drava (Drau) rivers in Croatia I wanted to explore possibilities to measure environmental data and make them publicly available.  As I searched around for DIY or open source sensor projects I found this one which wants to develop open source ocean weather buoy with 3d printable hull. It looks like the project development is in some kind of pause but the idea behind it looks solid and one can get many useful details out of it.

The sensor pack sphere is made from two 3d printed parts, one can be transparent if you want to have small solar photo-voltaic cell power source.  There is also a pressure equalization valve installed since the internal pressure changes due to water pressure, temperature and movement so it allows air to to move but prevents  water from entering.

My plan is to cooperate with local HackLab and Croatian, Hungarian and Serbian environmental NGOs and see if we can use it to track river water data (temperature, flow, pH, UV radiation, noise, particles etc). I'll still need to research some low cost water quality sensors. If we deploy few of them in Danube they could even reach the Black Sea.

Buoy in scale to human hand, you can clearly see the antenna for cellular or data connection. It could probably be used for different bands if you use it in open waters, there are many low power solutions even with satellite communications and Arduino.

Retro Populator is an open source project by Eric Boyd that developed a kit for your 3d printer to convert it into pick and place machine suitable for small scale home electronics manufacturing.

Project description from hackaday.io:
A jig and software for allowing a 3D printer to do electronics pick-n-place assembly. It populates boards, by retrofitting a 3D printer, hence Retro Populator.

Motivation: surface mount soldering is great, but the process of placing parts is tedious and requires great manual dexterity as well good vision. Doing a few boards by hand is practical, but doing more than about 20 is hell on earth. Yet it's not practical (read: affordable) to pay industry to do it until about 500 boards - the setup charges just kill you. So there is this huge chasm between what's doable for hobbyists by hand, and where industry can take over, and this volume is commonly desired in the maker community - a small run of 50 to 100 boards is in fact typical. Thus, the desire to build machines that hobbyists can own to do electronics pick-n-place. Our cost-saving idea is to retrofit similar machines that makers already own: 3D printers.

Team:
Rob Gilson
Adam Evenden
Charles Hartlaub
Eric Boyd
There are several versions of Retro Populator being developed:
Version 1.0 : Essentially complete now. CNC milled acrylic base plate, with milled tape holders. Vacuum syringe for picking up parts, vacuum supplied by SMT rework station. Milled nozzle mount which attaches to the side of the existing extruder. Z-axis rezero jig to easily change re-zero height. 3D printed cam-lock parts to holds boards in place on 10mm peg-grid base. Code parses a yml file for board & tape placement info, and then an eagle .brd file directly for part types and locations. It generate a gcode file which goes from pick to place location for all of the parts which can be populated. Support for
multiple boards.

Version 2.0: currently in planning/design. Addition of tape advancement, including plastic cover peeling. Addition of a second nozzle which will do solder paste dispensing. Software will have 'position confirm' feature where it will move to the corner of each board, and the first component on each tape, so that you can verify key locations directly before running the entire job.

Version 3.0: part rotation. Numerous other things we'll learn about as we do V2.0, no doubt...

http://sensebridge.net/files/RetroPopulatorMap_V101.pdf

Maybe we will soon have thousands of small electronics factories in garages competing with corporate sector ...
But first who should be afraid of this competition are companies like Adafruit ... they are in the same market as those "hobbyists" ...

Defense Distributed know for their work on 3d printed guns released the Ghost Gunner. It is a small simplified desktop CNC machine that can finish a specific type of metal gun receiver. The controversy is that the receiver is the only gun part that is tracked in USA. Other parts to finish the complete gun one can purchase freely in the USA. Media is already  hyping this news as "machine that is producing METAL guns untraceable by law enforcement". So few things to consider before panicking:

  1. Everything this machine does can be made by hand easily with simple power tools
  2. The machine development is closely linked to USA law and gun part market, since other countries have different definitions of what a traceable gun part is.
  3. A change in the law, for example: making gun barrels traceable also can make it completely obsolete. Granted, someone can then develop open source gun barrel maker (which is much more complex then this CNC) ... even so, most of countries have much stricter gun laws then USA
  4. CNC machines that can perform all this functions are available on the market for decades with slightly higher prices (which will drop in the future anyway)

It will be interesting to watch how this technology develops in the future and how will the lawmakers and media react to it. It will be also interesting to see how will the usage scenarios develop.
This machine makes only one thing now from semi-finished aluminum object, but it looks like it could be programmed to make other designs so DIY gunsmithing ecosystem could emerge.

Ghost Gunner technical specifications:
  • Machinable dimensions: 175 x 75 x 60mm (~6.75 x 2.95 x 2.35")
  • Maximum part dimensions: 230 x 90 x 100mm (~9.05 x 3.50 x 3.90")
  • Overall footprint: 330 x 280mm (~13 x 11")
  • Weight: 20kg (~45 pounds)
  • Spindle Speed: 10,000+ RPM (Final Value TBD)
  • Requirements: Windows 7 or higher. Mac version TBD.
  • Price: in 1199 USD range

About Ghost Gunner from their page:
Ghost Gunner is a non-profit open source hardware effort by Defense Distributed. Ghost Gunner builds on the open source community's existing hard work, including the gshield 3 axis motion hardware, the grbl g-code parser and motion controller, and the legendary Arduino microcontroller. All GhostGunner schematics and design files will be published into the public domain. Defense Distributed decided to build our own machine from the ground up. We found existing CNC machines too expensive, too DIY, or too inaccurate to manufacture firearms for the casual user. By miniaturizing the build envelope to just large enough to mill common firearm receivers, we were able to improve rigidity, reduce material cost and simultaneously relax some design limits, allowing us to sell an inexpensive machine with more than enough accuracy to manufacture firearms.

Ghost Gunner has undergone several design revisions to reduce machine chatter, backlash, and jitter, all with the goal of keeping total design cost low. Rather than using plastic, wood, or even an aluminum frame, Ghost Gunner is constructed with maximally rigid plasma-cut A36 steel and 304 stainless steel. In addition, the machine part count is greatly reduced compared to a traditional CNC, which both increases rigidity and further decreases cost. The end result is a small, cheap, and simple machine that exceeds most consumer-priced CNC machine specifications.

Ghost Gunner is a miniature CNC machine designed to automatically manufacture publicy created designs with nearly zero user interaction. No prior CNC knowledge or experience is required to manufacture from design files. Defense Distributed's first design is the venerable AR-15 lower receiver. Ghost Gunner automatically finds and aligns your 80% lower receiver to the machine, with simple installation instructions, point and click software and all required tools. Just follow a few simple instructions to mount your 80% lower receiver, tighten a couple screws (with simple tools we provide), and on day one, Ghost Gunner can help you legally manufacture unserialized firearms in the comfort of your own home.

As shipped, Ghost Gunner can manufacture any mil-spec 80% AR-15 lower receiver that already has the rear take down well milled out. Lowers with non-mil-spec trigger guards that are otherwise mil-spec are also compatible.
Ghost Gunner is capable of manufacturing more than just firearm receivers. With Defense Distributed's open source Physibles Development SDK (pDev), designers can distribute files via our '.dd' file format, which contains all installation and assembly instructions, any required jig files to hold the part in place (that users can print with a 3D printer), and all machine definitions and code to physically manufacture a particular design.
To a casual user, the .dd file is a one-stop solution to manufacturing any aluminum physible that the public can design to fit into the build envelope. Defense Distributed will be developing in and supporting this format, and we are happy to publish your own innovations and contributions.

Here is a new extruder developed by Richard Horne that can print directly from pellets. It is much cheaper to print from pellets then to buy filament. One could also grind disposed or failed prints and recycle them directly.

There are several well developed projects for DIY filament extruders but their main purpose is to produce filament and not directly print from it.
There are also new machines like Sculptify David that print from pellets but nothing open sourced and adapted for variety of small home 3d printers.

This is project under development and Richard is asking for feeedback, so go and drop a comment on his video:

AirEnergy3D is Polish company who wants to develop open source 3d printable wind power generator. If they are successful this will be great advancement for low cost wind power generation.

Key features:
  • AirEnergy3D is a 3d printed wind turbine that you can setup on your balcony, roof or take it camping
  • It can generate up to 300W of electrical power (this may be too optimistic, or the featured size will be increased, since the power for showcased size turbine is in 30W range in good wind)
  • It's small, it's durable, it's customizable and it' very cheap compared to existing wind based solutions
  • you can fit it in a backpack, move and assemble anywhere without using power tools

It is on Kickstarter now:

Proof of concept makes a LED light up, but do keep in mind that gear systems reduce efficiency

There are similar projects even for the generator system, like this one:

http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2013/05/small-3d-printed-wind-power-generator.html

... but I think there is a need for more integrated, well tested and optimized system. Open Sourcing it is a big plus and could make the technology spread and further developed by the community sand users.

If you want to build a home wind generator without 3d printing, here is an open source Zoetrope design build plan:

As I wrote in previous DIY aquaponics post, I'm researching from my future projects. I discovered 3DPonics which is modular system of 3d printed elements that enables you to create low cost home hydroponic system for growing plants in used plastic bottles.
Growing vegetables in most types of plastic bottles and containers is considered safe.

The system is completely free and open source. I'm huge supporter of open source movement and this is very important point for me. I think it is alos possible to "upgrade" it with a fishtank to get fully aquaponic growth system.

It looks like an ideal setup for small spaces bot indoor and outdoor. Maybe I'll build this for next growing season. I'm gathering plastic bottles for other projects and have seed material for old types of tomatoes and peppers. Growing your own food is like growing your own money.
Maybe next year ...
