Cliff is in action again!!! Swedish 3d printing guru designed a new small RepRap and he wants YOU to help him name it! Live him a comment under a video with your idea.
The no-name RepRap is a interesting looking machine that has many 3d printed structure parts that can be produced on a standard sized printbed.

Cliff is well known for his Fubot i1 and Funbot Pro.

This guy made a very cheap 3d printer enclosure made from cardboard box :-) It probably works and can be used as improvised heat chamber but there could be a slight fire hazard. But if you don't have any money, you will take some risks. I know that for a fact. You could also try using some salvaged drywall or gypsum plates.
Stay safe kids! It's always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher in your house.

If you need a different low cost solution you could try this one with cheap plastic boxes:

Ourobotics is an Irish company that is developing bioprinters. They published an open source low cost bioprinter based on some standard RepRap parts named Renegade that can be sourced for some 900 USD. I doubt that someone will 3d print a kidney on it in a home workshop but some interesting biohacking project could come up in the future.

Ourobotics also developed high-end bioprinter that can print with 10 materials, has enclosed warm chamber for keeping the cells alive and costs some 12500 Euro.

... here it is printing an ear:

Rugged and raw DIY style ... it is worth to gut some kitchen cabinets to build it ...

Here is one of the cheapest DIY 3d printers you can make, with cost at around 60 USD, and it is DLP SLA machine!
It also comes with very detailed construction guide made by the developer "matstermind".

How can the price be so low? Mostly by using used or scraped parts. You can see it in the parts list below.

Bill of materials:
  • 1x Mitsubishi XD221u 1024x768 video projector, used or second-hand $50
  • 1x computer disc drive laser deck assembly (must be one with a stepper motor), free from scrap disc drive
  • 1x Arduino UNO / Duemilanove or atmega328 based Arduino clone, $4 ebay, used or second-hand
  • 1x Easydriver v4.4, $2 from ebay
  • misc wire, solder, etc.
  • (optional) Ability to etch circuit boards (you can protoboard/breadboard it if you have to)
  • (possibly) 5v, .5A power supply. Some laser decks can be powered by the USB port by the Arduino, some may need a power supply to be plugged into the Arduino or M+ on the easydriver to make the motor move. It will depend on the power of your USB port. My deck did not need one.
  • Total=$55.5
  • (optional for frame) scrap wood for free or 2x4ft MDF board or $10 from hardware store

Looks rough and simple with wood frame. I like the style ...

Chimera is named inspired by mythological creature that is made up of three different animals since this printer is made by using the recycled/modified parts of three different categories (projector, toys, and old computer stuff), hence the name.

Here is very simple, low cost and easy to make wooden Repstrap 3d printer presented on Thingiverse developed by user "skeat". It has a relatively small print volume (120mm x 120mm x 100mm) but it was designed as very simple and cheap machine to produce 3d printed parts for your "bigger" machine.
You will need only few common hand tools and materials. The structural frame is made from 12.5mm x 24mm wood pieces and 6mm plywood held by screws and liquid nails.

The design is based on Prusa i3, so the vitamins needed are:
  • 6x smooth rods
  • 1x M5 threaded rod
  • 11x LM8UU linear bearings
  • 4x stepper motors
  • 2x 608 ball bearings
  • pulley and belts
  • 1x coupling
Only 3d printed part is the extruder.

I love the design style:

Here is video of it in action:

http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2013/11/diy-3d-printers-made-from-wood.html

This wonderful DIY 3d printer was made by peterthinks and it is a work of a Repstrap genius with its improvisations, innovations and rough design. The entire machine cost around 120 USD and it will get even cheaper.
I'm a big fan of wood frame machines and building stuff with anything you got available.

Here is the presentation of MSF 3d printer (you will find out what MSF acronym stands for later on in the description ...):

Here is MSF moving:

From project description:
This is not a kit. This is an introduction to the Monkey Shit Fight repstrap RepRap. It is seeking it's end-stops as it prepares to print a louse. That's me mumbling in the background trying to not sound like a crazy shut-in.
It's super easy to put together and I want to make a laser cut version. I've eliminated almost all the parts associated with traditional RepRaps. Not including the base I have the entire machine frame down to 10 wood parts. I will have the kit down to about 7 laser cut parts and 4 of those will be exactly the same dimensions. Pretty simple stuff!
I built this for about $120. That includes all electronics, motors and materials. Eliminating one of the Z axis motors really lowered the part count and increased the Z resolution. The V grove pulleys do double duty in that regard. They multiply the lifting force of the motor and increase the number of steps required to move up a millimeter. All the design changes I have made to improve this RepRap including fixed drive belt sections attached to metal edging, using Kevlar to tension the frame,
The blind nut adjusters for the Z axis smooth rod leveling, The flying gantry X carriage, The single motor Z axis pulley and carriage bolt Kevlar suspension system for the X carriage and the silicone tubing tensioning idler for the Y axis are all free to use for private non commercial use under the GPL licence. So if you wanna use these improvements on your own personal machine feel free. If you want to use these in a kit or sell upgrades for commercially available machines you'll need permission.
The build area is about 250 by 350 by 200 millimeters but I got it dialed down to match the heated bed till I can make a bigger one. All work was done with simple hand tools. The most exotic tools used were a Dremel a cheap drill press and a ancient one speed hand drill.

If you made your own 3d printer you will nbe able to make this simple and small desktop cnc mill that will expand your tool options. It can engrave and make PCBs and any other thing you can imagine.

The project is developed by Instructables user liquidhandwash and it is made with 3d printed plastic parts, Arduino Uno, lasercut acrylic plates for frame (hand cut wood looks doable also), NEMA style motors and other simple parts. The spindle motor was recycled from an old cordless drill. There is no exact price but it looks very affordable.

So much interesting projects, so little time ...

"Robots are hard to drive. ROBOPuppet exists to make them easier to drive." This is a first sentence on ROBOpuppet "About" page and it explains this project perfectly.

ROBOpuppet is basically a miniature copy of full size industrial robot that you can move and use it as simple low cost control unit. All the movements of the ROBopuppet are followed by the big robot.

This teleoperation control unit can be made for as low as 85 USD.

Josef Prusa made an innovative ultra-low cost automatic printbed leveling mechanism for his RepRap.
It is made out of two glass plates and four micro switches (one in each corner) activated by printhead pressure.
The setup costs some 20 cents, so it is probably the easiest to make and cheapest system around.
Only limitations are that the switches get pressed if you print an object heavier then 300 grams and that you are limited in using heated bed.

Norge Systems is a Dover, UK based company that want to bring affordable SLS 3d printers to the crowds. They will compete with two models: The Ice9 which is larger and Ice1 which is a "desktop" model. Additional to 3d printing their machines have laser cutting and engraving capabilities.

The prices of Norge 3d printers are definitely pushing the price level for this type of technology and making it more accessible to the wider DIY community. Hopefully the prices will drop in the entire sector.

Pi Top is DIY laptop kit based on Raspberry Pi and aimed at education and students. The team used 3d printing to prototype the casing. Maybe they could release the files and open source the project for the people who want to build it completely on their own and not buy it in kit form.

Pi Top features (from the project page):
  • Free Hardware Innovation Lessons: Pi-Top is where it starts. We will be building new content for Pi-Top users.Learn to 3D print, design PCBs and create your own products from start to finish.
  • No Compromising on Quality: Mobile designs often use Bluetooth keyboards, that took away from the user experience. Enjoy using Raspberry Pi with a fully integrated laptop keyboard and track-pad with extra ports.
  • Easy Component Access: A clear sliding panel allows access to the Raspberry Pi. Kickstarter DAY 1 editionPi-Tops will feature a lazer-etched panel design, as well as the standard clear panel.
  • Raspbian Operating System: Once built your Raspberry Pi is ready to go. Start learning to program on the latest Raspbian OS.
  • 6 - 8 Hour Battery Life & Wifi enabled: Battery time 6+ hours. Wifi enabled out of the box, Pi-Top is truly mobile.
  • 13.3" Screen: No compromising on screen size. Enjoy using your Raspberry Pi with a 13.3" HD screen.

Pi Top homepage: http://www.pi-top.com/

Reddit thread where they presented their 3d printed prototype:

http://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/2g0opb/fullsized_3d_printed_laptop_prototype_pitop_print/

They used the following setup:
  • Printer used: Rostock Max V2 kit - with E3D full metal hotend
  • Filament: PLA 1.75mm nozzle: 205 Bed temp: 55 Speed: 70mm/sec
  • Print time: 3 prints total (two pieces together and the two larger pieces seprately) roughly 160 hours of printing
  • Support settings: KISSlicer with medium support, at 45 Degrees with a horizontal gap (from object) of 1mm.
  • De-string Settings: Prime 5.5mm Suck: 5.4mm Wipe:5mm Z-lift: 1mm
  • Notes from the creators: "PLA really keeps its shape well. We had to use floating beams in the STLs to achieve a rigid enough support structure so the model wouldn't wobble after 10 inches tall and ruin the print. We found KISSlicer worked the best in terms of support structure."

Let the desktop laser sintering revolution begin!

Sintratec is company from Switzerland that wants to develop first  desktop selective laser sintering DIY 3d printer. They aim to launch a crowdfunding campaign in October to raise money to ship at least 60 kit printers with price under 3999 euro ($5,277).

The main feature is that they will replace CO2 laser used in current SLS machines with diode laser which is cheaper and visible by human eye which gives more safety.

These videos show that they are already successful with prototype 3d printers and that the printed objects are strong:

Company homepage: http://sintratec.com/

Sintratec desktop SLS 3d printer prototype, the "Bobby" with 130mm cubed print volume

Example of object printed on Sintratec machine

Update (29.1.2015.):

Sintratec presented a finished machine and had a successful Indiegogo campaign where they raised  $213,337 out of their $175,000 target.
Looks like we will have laser sintering on our desktops soon. Maybe they will be standard machine type.

Here is the presentation video:

Technical specifications from the Indiegogo:
  • Compact Size: 550x530x360mm. Fits on your desk.
  • Build Volume: 130x130x130mm. Laser sintering allows you to stack objects or place them diagonally in the build volume resulting in a maximum build dimension of 225mm and thus, making the build volume quite large.
  • Diode Laser: 2300mW, blue laser. The laser is compact and comes with high quality optics. The laser light is visible, making optical adjusting safer. Laser safety glasses are included in the kit.
  • Main Print Material: Nylon PA12 Powder. Very strong and high resolution parts. Flexible if printed thin. Dark in color to better absorb the laser.
  • Heated Laser Sintering: Both with a heating coil and optical heaters. A heated build chamber opens a whole new world of 3D printing: Objects don’t have to be fixed down on a build plate as it is the case with cold laser sintering, stereolithography or filament 3D printing.
  • Priced from USD 3999 to USD 4999 on Indiegogo

Final design looks much better then the prototype
